Approximately 80% of maternal deaths are preventable with cost effective interventions. Many women do not access health care and deliver in the community. The key to improvements in maternal health are timely referral to health care and quality of obstetric care. The Nkhoma Safe Motherhood Program has the aim to reduce maternal mortality in the Nathenje Health Area in Lilongwe distric, Malawi.
