Maternal mortality in Malawi is 1100/100,000. Approximately 80% of maternal deaths are preventable with cost effective interventions. Many women do not access health care and deliver in the community. The key to improvements in maternal health are timely referral to health care and quality of obstetric care.

The Nkhoma Safe Motherhood Program has the aim to reduce maternal mortality in the Nathenje Health Area in Lilongwe distric, Malawi. 

Objectives

 Objective 1:  To improve awareness in the community concerning maternal health and empower women to access health services
 Objective 2: To improve quality of referrals through training of TBA's
 Objective 3: To improve the time of referral through better means of transport
 Objective 4:  To improve the time of referral through better communication between health centre and hospital
 Objective 5: To improve quality of care on a health centre level through supervision and training
 Objective 6: To build capacity on a health area level to improve maternal health
